Happy Earth Day from Color Ridge Farm & Creamery

As an agricultural business, we understand that our operations have a significant impact on the environment. We recognize that the land provides us with an abundance of resources that are crucial to our livelihood. We are grateful for the earth and the land that sustains us and our community. It is our responsibility to give back and ensure that we protect the environment for future generations to enjoy.

At Color Ridge Farm & Creamery, we are committed to sustainable farming practices. We use methods that minimize the practice of tilling, reduce soil erosion, and promote biodiversity. Our goal is to maintain a healthy ecosystem and preserve the natural beauty of the land. We support local conservation efforts and collaborate with other businesses to promote sustainable practices. For example, we use food scraps and used coffee grounds from The Wild Rabbit Café to make nutrient-rich compost, and coffee chaff from Shooke Coffee Roasters for our chicken bedding and compost. At our store, we prioritize the use of reusable glass containers, jars, and cups for dine-in ice cream service. For takeout orders, we only use compostable bowls, spoons, and cups, and never harmful plastic that ends up in the landfill.

Earth Day is an opportunity for us to celebrate our commitment to the environment and raise awareness about the importance of protecting our planet. We encourage our community to join us in this effort by making simple changes in their daily lives, such as reducing waste, conserving water, and supporting sustainable businesses. Together, we can make a positive impact and ensure a brighter future for generations to come.

Thank you for supporting us in our mission to protect the earth and the land that we call home!

Earth Day Resources

There are many resources out there that promote, educate, and advocate for sustainable farming practices. One of our favorites is Kiss the Ground. If you have not heard of them, we definitely recommend you check them out.

We have provided links to a few of their incredible videos below!

Our Farm Update

We have been really busy the past few weeks preparing for an amazing gardening season. Several weeks ago, we started growing garden seeds inside under grow lights. These plants include tomatoes, cabbage, broccoli, squashes, peppers, herbs, flowers, and many more!

This year, we are expanding our garden by converting the area next to our existing garden space (which is currently just grass) into more garden spaces and raised beds.

Our compost piles are thriving! Thanks to our collaboration with The Wild Rabbit Café, we have just about filled up our compost bins and are even planning to build more. This compost will be used to provide rich nutrients to our gardens, allowing us to grow incredibly tasty and nutritious produce. We plan to sell this produce at our store and the Wayne County Farmers’ Market this year.

Next month, our little alpacas will be sheared for the first time! We are excited to use their wool and turn it into yarn at Wild Red Clover Mill. Then, we will make fun products like hats and scarves to sell at our store. We will provide an update next month, along with photos of the post-shearing experience.

We anticipate that our orchard will start waking up and possibly blooming in the next few weeks. We hope that we do not get a late frost, like we did last year, and that our orchard will produce an abundance of fruit this year.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

To our dear customers and friends:

We took a chance starting our creamery in 2022, unsure where things would lead. Gratefully, the response was humbling and overwhelming; and over the last three seasons, you, our dear customers, have allowed us to create a beautiful, vibrant business.

Sadly, the future of our building is in a constant state of uncertainty, leaving us unable to plan for the next season. We’ve also come to realize it cannot accommodate our needed growth, nor allow us to foster the environment we want for our staff and customers. And with no other suitable locations currently available, we have made the heartbreaking decision to close our shop.

We know this news will come with shock and sadness to many; and we recognize the void it will leave in our beautiful community. We grieve this.

While we are currently considering other options for making our ice cream available, at the end of the day, the soulfulness of our business came from the joy of personally engaging with you and sharing our heart-felt creations face-to-face. We will announce any new changes or developments should they arise. And, in the future, should a new, suitable location make itself available, maybe a new version of our creamery can be reimagined.

We are taking time now to pause, listen, grieve, reflect, and allow a space for change. While we may no longer have our shop, we are still here and hope we can find other ways to use our gifts in supporting the spirit of belonging and community here in Wayne County.

From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU for supporting our creamery and for helping us feel a part of our community. It has been a joy and a pleasure.

With love and gratitude,
Joseph & A.C. - “the ice cream guys”
